An Example of How It Works
When Sarah's father passed away, she knew she wanted to do something that would establish a lasting legacy for him. She remembered that during his lifetime he was always praising Children's Aid for its tireless efforts to better his community.
Sarah decided to make a gift to Children's Aid in her father's name using appreciated securities. Not only will her father's legacy live on at Children's Aid thanks to the gift and a commemorative plaque, but Sarah also received a federal income tax charitable deduction (because she itemizes her taxes) and eliminated capital gains tax on the securities.

A charitable bequest is one or two sentences in your will or living trust that leave to Children's Aid a specific item, an amount of money, a gift contingent upon certain events or a percentage of your estate.

A revocable living trust is set up during your lifetime and can be revoked at any time before death. They allow assets held in the trust to pass directly to beneficiaries without probate court proceedings and can also reduce federal estate taxes.

A donor advised fund is an account that you set up but which is managed by a nonprofit organization. You contribute to the account, which grows tax-free. You can recommend how much (and how often) you want to distribute money from that fund to Children's Aid or other charities. You cannot direct the gifts.
